The Osborne Brothers and Dottie West join the Grand Ole Opry cast (August 8, 1964)
Bobby and Sonny, the Osborne Brothers and Dottie West both officially joined the Grand Ole Opry cast on Saturday night, August 8, 1964, with both acts performing for the first time as Opry members on the same portion: the 8:30 Martha White show, hosted that night (with Flatt & Scruggs out of town) by Bill Anderson. Approximately 20 minutes of this segment, with commercials/sponsor references edited out, plus any remarks that might "date" the show when played later, were subsequently released to radio stations around the country as part of a syndicated package of Grand Ole Opry shows (which WSM sent out to participating radio stations from 1964-1968). Roy Acuff introduces Uncle Dave Macon and his son, Dorris on the American Ace Coffee portion of the Grand Ole Opry from December 6, 1947 to perform their unique version of Acuff's own 1942 hit, "Night Train to Memphis". This performance, the only known recording of Macon performing the song, was captured on a rare off-air acetate disc recording.

    I heard an old recording of the Grand Ole Opry and it was a band and they were playing the fiddle tune Billy In The Low ground and Deport was backing them with that harmonica and he made every individual note the fiddle played on that harmonica and it was beautiful. It was not right in the first ever broadcast Deport opened the show and from then they put him in the shadows. Nobody could play a harmonica like him.

    Lots of folks don't realize DeFord Bailey was literally the first person to perform on the Saturday night show that came be know as the Grand Ole Opry. Folks who think Black people don't belong in Country music are advertising their ignorance on _multiple_ levels!

    Love the Crook Brothers. Always have. I am 61 and I've listened to them all my life. Sure do miss hearing them on the Opry. Thanks for posting Robert.
